Vehicle Quilts for Boys

What is it about little boys and vehicles?  When my boys were small, they would get very excited if we passed a fire truck, police car, or ambulance during our drive to the grocery store.  If we were home when the garbage truck was making its rounds through the alley behind the house, we’d run to the back gate to watch the big truck lift and empty the dumpsters.  Ian, our graphic artist, used to tell me that he wanted to be a fireman or a garbage truck driver when he grew up.  Nathan, our engineer, was more interested in the construction equipment, so we’d walk around the corner to watch the builders work on new houses in our neighborhood.

One reason that I started designing paper pieced vehicles for Ms P Designs is because I noticed that there weren’t many quilt patterns available that are meant just for little boys.  I don’t intend to be sexist though; any little truck-loving kid might enjoy having a special quilt made with these fun designs!  I’ve been adding new designs on a regular basis, growing our inventory from the original four pieces of construction equipment shown below to include ships, jeeps, farm equipment, food trucks, and train cars along with road signs and roadway pieces.  It has been quite a ride!

I’ve been very pleased with the popularity of my designs, and I so enjoy hearing from our customers and seeing the quilts that they’ve made with our vehicle patterns!  I thought that you might enjoy looking at photos of these wonderful quilts, made and shared by three of our customers.

This quilt was made by Donna S. for her three-year-old grandson.  Donna combined the pieced vehicle blocks with transportation-themed fabric blocks in her quilt.  This is a great way to showcase a collection of coordinating prints.  The sashes and borders that look like roads are so cute!  Can you just imagine her little guy driving his toy trucks around the “roads” as he plays?

Eva S. created this great quilt for her little grandson.  Each vehicle block is framed in deep green, with lighter green used for the sashes and borders. Eva’s choice of using a “blender” fabric for the frames and borders makes the colorful vehicles really stand out.  Did you notice how each row’s vehicles are “moving” in the same direction?  I’m sure that Eva’s little guy is going to enjoy hours of creative play, inspired by this wonderful quilt that his grandmother made, just for him.

Susan A. wanted to give a very special Christmas gift to her 3-year-old grandson, and this is what she created for him!  Susan’s quilt includes vehicles that she made with our patterns, as well as several additional blocks that she designed herself.  Notice the road signs and roadway borders that she added to personalize her creation.  The red and gray sashes are a great setting for the brightly colored vehicle blocks.  I’m sure that her little guy is loving his cuddly quilt.

I made two small quilts to feature a few of the blocks, just to show how cute they are in a finished quilt.  I used a construction equipment print with the construction blocks, and a nautical print with the ship blocks.  These little nursery quilts went together quickly, and will make great gifts for some special little guys.

I still have a huge stack of finished vehicle blocks that I’ve made as I’ve created these patterns, and my to-do list includes making a quilt with these fun blocks.  It might need to wait for a while, since both of my “little” boys are too grown up to need their own vehicle quilts.  “Vroom, vroom, vroom”!
