Cookie Day!!!

We so excited to be part of the “Virtual Cookie Exchange” blog hop, sponsored by Carol at Just Let Me Quilt!  You’ll find the schedule at the end of this post, with links to all of the participating bloggers.

Traditions!  Every family has their own, and this is one of our  favorites.  We call it…. Cookie Day!  (I know; not very original, but we like it anyway.)  The photos below are from Cookie Days of Christmas past.

The family gathers together on a Saturday afternoon during December.  We bring home-baked cookies, lots of sprinkles, and supplies to make several colors of icing.   Our kids have been a major part of Cookie Day since they were old enough to sit up in a chair and hold a cookie!  We spread colored icing on the baked cookies, and then decorate them with sprinkles.  When the cookies are decorated, we eat taco soup for dinner.

There are a few “rules” for cookie day:

  1. We absolutely must listen to Christmas music.  You can sing along if you want to sing.  Dancing is permitted, as long as you don’t step on the dog.
  2. You might will get a little messy.  Festive Christmas aprons are provided, if you like.
  3. You must share the bowls of colored icing with others.  Sharing is caring, don’t you know!  No hogging the green icing; other people may want to make some trees too.  Just sayin’.
  4. If you break a cookie, you have to eat it.  Right away.  Compliance with this rule is generally not a problem, although I strongly suspect that more than a few cookies are deliberately broken.  ;o)
  5. You can decorate as many cookies as you like.  Take home the cookies that you decorate, and enjoy them later.Recipe

  1. Yum! We used to have Cookie Day too when our girls were young and still at home. Sometimes I still get to carry on the tradition with my grandchildren if we are together long enough at Christmas time. I miss that when we don’t. Thanks for sharing!

When we lived in WA state and our children were little, we had a tradition of going to a Christmas tree farm and cutting down a fresh tree and then that grew into buying a living tree after a few years, so we could plant it in the yard. On a visit last year back to one of the homes we lived in that Christmas tree we planted was way taller than the house! We must have planted that tree over 28 years ago! Nice to see it was still there and thriving. Oh and the house was a single story, but still the tree was huge! I am a Mrs. P too by the way, lol!

  10. What a great slideshow of Cookie Days – that is a fabulous tradition! When I was a kid and lived on a farm where the neighbors were far away, my family always piled in the back of the truck and went caroling around the “block”, about a mile square. We’d have chili and hot chocolate afterwards. Now with my own family, we take treats and carol to our neighbors.

  18. I love your family tradition and very liberal, realistic rules! I used to bake each year with my 5 boys and they would invite friends. We called it the baking playdate. I admit that we had that rule of broken cookies, even without stating it from the start. You can almost smell the baking in your post but I certainly do feel the love of family. elanagoldberg5@gmail.com

  19. How fun! I remember my mom having the Brownies over and how she set up decorating trays in the kitchen – using TV trays. She always had good ideas. Now I make cookies alone – but we do go to Balboa Park for December Nights together so that’s a lot of fun.

  22. My mom always made dozens and dozens of cookies at Christmas time to feed her 8 kids. Not a crumb was wasted! Now I carry on that tradition and make cookies too, but not quite as many. Having only 2 kids means less eating!

  24. When my kids were young we would have a cookie day, too. Now I try to have one with my grandchildren if they visit during December. I really love your rules. 😊

    1. Sounds like a wonderful plan! Susan has three grandchildren who help out on Cookie Day too. It’s such fun to have everyone together for Christmas traditions. :o)

  26. My husband and I had a blended family. We did cookie day using his “super secret family cookie recipe”. Lets just say if it is humid you add more flour, if it is dry, you add more buttermilk. Add frosting and sprinkles, and it was nothing to make 13 dozen cookies easily and sprinkles were all over our home. Love your cookie day rules. Oh yeah hubby was very particular about the cookies, so he was dubbed the official cookie nazi one year.

  28. My kids always had a Christmas Eve gift – it was PJs – took them forever to figure out that would always be their gift. Now at 27 and 21 they still want to do the PJ gift and then after they are warm and snugly we watch our newest favorite Elf. Maybe someday a movie will beat out Elf, but the Christmas Eve gift will never change.

  32. My family hosts a big family and friends dinner for the holiday and we play bingo, or trivia, or pull numbers for everyone to win gifts. The gifts are usually $7 or under, anyone can contribute and many are handmade. Last year my sister and I made fleece blankets (from remnants) and they were a huge hit.

  34. We’ve always spent the night at our daughter’s house so we can see the grandbabies Christmas morning. This year we built a multigenerational home so we won’t have to travel at all!! Merry Christmas!

  35. Love, love your Cookie Day tradition. My kids and I had a cookie decorating day when they were little but after marriage and grandkids, it only happens on occasion. The rules are spot on…I, too, am sure some cookies were broken intentionally! Ha, ha. Thanks for sharing your cookie recipe. Merry Christmas

  39. My Christmas traditions have changed over the years due to changes in family (deaths, marriages, new kids, etc.), changes in health, and what is most important to me. For about 15 years, I played for Christmas Eve services, but that changed with a new music director at our church about 2 years ago. Now, getting together with as much family as possible is what I look forward to.

  40. The cookies sound yummy, and the pictures are great! When my boys were little, we always spent several hours making all kinds of Christmas cookies. Which we then promptly ate, of course! Thanks for the giveaway, too.
