Churn Dash TR

Hi Fellow Quilters!

I really enjoy setting a pretty table whenever I have guests over for dinner.  It is fun to get out the “nice” dishes and use a colorful runner on the table to make everything look festive.  We linger around the table, enjoying the food and conversation, until long after the meal is finished.

I really loved working with the combination of bright pretty fabrics that I used for the tea cozy, so I decided to create a coordinating table runner for summer entertaining using the same fabric selections.  Wouldn’t this make a lovely setting for an afternoon tea or Sunday brunch!

The “Spring Flowers” table runner went together quickly, with just three easy churn dash blocks combined with setting triangles and simple pieced borders.  I’ve added appliqued flowers and pretty green leaves to each of the setting triangles to give it a pop of vibrant color.  The finished runner measures 16″ by 47″.

While I was finishing up the “Spring Flowers” table runner, Susan kept tempting me with beautiful Christmas fabrics that she found online, on sale no less.  (Yes, she leads me astray from time to time!  Bad Susan, LOL)  I had a little spare time, so I decided to make a second, but significantly different, table runner from the same pattern. 

The “Christmas Holly” churn dash table runner is identical to the “Spring Flowers” runner, but my fabric selections and placement make them look very different!  This runner features a simple border with appliqued holly leaves and red button “berries”.  I love this pretty green fabric, printed with cheerful holly  sprigs!  (Susan insisted that I buy it.)  It looks great with the red-on-red toile and white snowflake prints in the blocks.  The holly leaves in the border are made from several cheerful green print scraps that were lurking in my scrap bin.  I love the way it turned out, don’t you?  Won’t it look great on the table for Christmas morning brunch!  How many days is it until Christmas anyway?

My creative brain was still spinning with possibilities as I finished up the Christmas table runner, but I wasn’t quite ready to commit the time and materials to making another model.  And not just this, but my dear husband frequently asks, “How many table runners does one woman actually need?”  Not sure how to answer that question, but nevertheless, I can just see this design in red, white, and blue with stars appliqued in the setting triangles and/ or the borders.  Can you just imagine how much fun that would be?  So I’ve added some bonus star applique templates to the pattern packet, just in case you decide that you want to go patriotic!  Perhaps, one day, I’ll go ahead and make that pretty patriotic table runner with appliqued stars!  And for anyone who asks about it- “Oh, that table runner?  I made it a while ago!”  (LOL)
