Block of the Month

April Block of the Month

Happy April to all our elephant (and quilt!) loving friends!

This month’s elephant is delighted to find brightly decorated eggs on Easter morning.  She even found her favorite pair of bunny ears!

Eggs represent new life and it is believed that decorating eggs for Easter dates back to the 13th century!  My favorite Easter eggs are the Faberge eggs that were presented by the Czars of Russia to their wives and mothers on Easter Sunday.

Where did the rabbit that we know and love come into play for Easter?  According to historians, the Easter Bunny first arrived in America in the 1700’s when German immigrants settled in Pennsylvania.  Their children made sweet little nests where a bunny could lay its eggs AND left carrots lying around, just in case the bunny became hungry as he hopped from home to home.

Before the Easter Bunny became a “thing”, German children would make a nest of moss and hay for a Fox, and lock their pets away so the Easter Fox wouldn’t be disturbed.  In the morning would they would awaken to find magical treats from the Easter Fox.

The ever-practical Swiss have no use for a bunny.   Since it makes more sense for eggs to come from a bird, Swiss children fill their baskets with eggs and treats which have been left by the Easter Cuckoo!

Rabbits are not popular in Australia because they were introduced to the continent in the 1800’s and ate thousands of acres of crops.  So which critter did they choose?  A Bilby or rabbit-bandicoot, of course!  Let’s just say that they are critters that look like rats with big bunny ears.  Yikes!

I chose a light dotted fabric for the background of this block because I really wanted our little Easter egger to be the focus, but I do love that the dots look kind of like little Easter eggs!
