Happy Mother’s Day to all of you moms or people with moms!
This month our sweet elephant is celebrating Mother’s Day. What a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a box of chocolates, just for Mom! Since April showers bring May flowers, I chose a cute flowered fabric for the background for this block.
The origins of Mother’s Day dates back to before the Civil War. Ann Reeves Jarvis organized “Mother’s Day Work Clubs” to teach women how to properly care for their children. Later, in an effort to calm down the hostility after the Civil War, Ms. Jarvis created “Mother’s Friendship Day.” On Mother’s Friendship Day, she would gather mothers with Union and Confederate soldiers to promote reconciliation.
In 1870, Julia Ward Howe wrote a “Mother’s Day Proclamation” which called out to mother’s to join together and promote world peace. Ms. Howe campaigned for a “Mother’s Peace Day” which would be celebrated every June 2, but that plan never came to fruition.
The first Mother’s Day was celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis had a memorial service for her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis. Congress rejected Ms. Jarvis’ proposal to make Mother’s Day an official holiday; however, by 1911 all of the states in the union were holding their own Mother’s Day celebrations. It wasn’t until 1914 that Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation which designated a national holiday, wherein Mother’s Day would be held on the second Sunday in May specifically to honor all mothers.
Mother’s Day is celebrated around the world at various times. Just to name a few countries, Norway celebrates their Mother’s day the 2nd Sunday in February, UK celebrates mothers on the Fourth Sunday in Lent and calls it “Mothering Sunday,” whereas Indonesia celebrates Mom on December 22.
Regardless of when you celebrate your Mom, wouldn’t this make the cutest little mug rug or table mat for her?
