Log Cabins, Lazy Style

Hi Quilting Friends,

My #onemonthlygoal for March was to finish my scrappy “Lazy Log Cabin” quilt. Check! All done, and here’s a picture of my finished quilt! It will likely be a gift for my younger son, who enjoys hiking and picnics with his girlfriend (and their dogs). At 75″ square, this quilt is a nice size to spread on the ground for an outdoor luncheon!

I enlisted my Mom to help me tie the quilt, and we had a fun afternoon getting it all tied up. I really enjoyed spending time with Mom, visiting while we tied thousands of square knots. Well, maybe it wasn’t thousands!

School has been out for an extra week, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so I used some of that unexpected free time to stitch down the miles of binding around my quilt while watching episodes of “Father Brown”, a murder mystery series on NetFlix. Father Brown is a very keen observer. He always manages to solve the crime before the end of the episode, to the dismay of the detective. Kembleford, where Father Brown has his parish, seems to have an alarmingly high murder rate for such a small village.

I thought that you might enjoy a quick tutorial for these easy blocks. They are a great way to use up those scraps that you have lying around, and a good way to pass the time while you are observing social distancing.

Start by cutting your scraps into strips and sorting them into two piles – light & dark. The width of your strips will determine the size of the finished blocks. This series of pictures show the steps needed to make the blocks. Click on the picture to download the tutorial file!

I didn’t make any effort to coordinate colors or prints on my blocks. My only “rule” was that I wouldn’t use the same fabric twice in any block. It helps that I had many different strips from which to choose. This block would clearly work well with a more controlled color palette, but one of my objectives was to use scraps to finish this quilt, so that’s what I did.

  1. Love your use of scraps here! I’m thinking about a holiday scrap quilt and was going to use a more improvised design, but maybe I’ll include some lazy log cabins too. Wouldn’t be too much of an issue – I have a LOT of scraps 😀

  2. A great scrappy quilt. The riot of different colours work so well. Tieing the quilt suits is style so well. I’ve only tied one – a scrappy woollen quilt. I really like the look.
