It's Cool to Be Square

Hi Quilting Friends,

Welcome to the “It’s Cool to Be Square!” blog hop, hosted by our friend Carol at “Just Let Me Quilt”. We’re glad that you’re here today, and hope that you’ll enjoy your visit with us.

In geometry, a square is defined as “a plane figure with four equal straight sides and four right angles”. A person who is conventional or old-fashioned is also defined as a square. So, I guess, I’m a square who likes squares, and I’m OK with that; it’s hip to be a square. 😊

As soon as I signed up for the blog hop, I knew what my project would be- a square pillow cover. I decided to use the “Granny’s Star” block since, well, it has a lot of squares! I count 37 squares, and the block is a square too.

I made this “Star in Heart” pillow earlier this year, so I decided to use black, white, and two more bright, vibrant colors to coordinate my “Granny’s Star” block with this pillow!

My favorite color is purple, so I made the middle of the pillow and the larger star with a pretty swirly purple print. I love turquoise too, so the 4-patch squares that radiate from the center toward the corners are made with a lovely dragonfly print on turquoise. The center star is black, and the block is framed in black to enlarge the square so it will fit my existing sofa pillow.

Quilting is simple for my pillow; I just stitched around the main shapes on my block to enhance the star and the chains of squares. I love my new pillow!

Now that I have two vibrant new pillow covers, the rest of my throw pillows are looking shabby. I guess that I have another quick and easy project to add to my To-do list!

UPDATE: The giveaway has ended, and we’re please to announce that Carol K. has won a free digital copy of our “Granny’s Star” block pattern.

If you’d like to purchase the pattern for the 15″ square “Granny’s Star” block, it is available here:

  1. I love the pops of color in your pillows. I think appliqué is my favorite style of quilt so I don’t have a favorite shape, if I was forced to choose I’d say rectangles

  2. PS. My favorite block might be the log cabin. I like that pop of color in the middle and all the different designs you can make with that block.

  5. I love your pillows and have a new favorite square. I do like the nine patch of the variations of it. A good place to start.

  6. Beautiful pillows! Purple is my favorite color too. As for my favorite square block, hmmm, I like a lot of them – square in a square, 9-patch, and especially Irish Chain. I need to make a quilt like that and also your block. Thanks for the opportunity to win!

  7. Lovely block. I love how using different colours make it look like an entirely new block. I guess my favorite block using squares isn’t really a block. I love all the things that half-square triangles can do.

  8. You are so cool to create such a beautiful square pillow. I love how different the two pillows look with the same design but not the same fabrics…wow! You rocked the square thing on this one. Thank you for hopping with us!

  9. That is a hard question to answer. I do like the Irish Chain and the Log Cabin. But I almost feel like I haven’t been quilting long enough to find my absolute favorite block (I made my first quilt in 1971, but have only been entirely making quilts for the past 20 years).

  10. I like both your pillows but I love your pillow with the purple In it! It just makes it pop, of all the many blocks that have squares I think my favourite is the square in a square block! I do really appreciate the beauty of your Granny’s square might just have to make one! 😄 Carol
