May PHD Update

Hi Quilting Friends,

One of my personal goals for 2020 is to participate in the online quilting community, and so I’ve chosen to work on my PHD in 2020 with Gail at QuiltingGail. Here’s what I’ve been working on since my last update!

Project #4: Plum & Gold King-sized Quilt
Butterscotch and Purple Quilt by Sharon
Pieced King-size Quilt

I’m making this project my “One Monthly Goal” for June. I purchased some beautiful variegated thread in golds and browns when I finally went shopping last week, so I’m all set to get started quilting. School is out for the summer (YAY!), and I’m out of excuses for putting this finish off any longer. Wish me luck with quilting a king-sized quilt on my normal-sized domestic machine!

Project #7: Make a wall hanging from one of these patterns
More Patterns

I already know that this project is going to be fun to make, because I’ve created several other quilts with McKenna Ryan’s “Pine Needles” patterns. I’ve started tracing the pieces and searching my stash for the fabrics that I need. Won’t take long to get this one finished, now that I’ve begun!

Project #10: Scrappy Goose Trails Quilt, a.k.a “Corona Star” Quilt

I needed to choose a new name for this quilt, so we hosted a “Name That Block” contest via our newsletter and FaceBook pages. The winning entry was from our quilting friend, Linda H, who received an advance digital copy of the “Corona Star Quilt” pattern. Thank you for the excellent suggestion, Linda!

The top is completely pieced now, but quilting is on hold for this project because I haven’t found fabric that I like for the backing yet. I have some thread for quilting it, courtesy of my recent shopping expedition.

New Projects

I have started working on models for our “12 Days of Christmas” event, scheduled for December 1-12, and our “Stash Bustin’ Scrappy Sampler” Sew Along, which will start in January. The first two Christmas projects are finished, a little tea towel with an elf applique and a wine bottle carrier with a reindeer applique. Sew adorable!!! I’ve stitched up 12 of the 26 blocks for the sampler as well. This is all “secret sewing”, so I won’t share any photos yet. (Yep. I’m teasing you again. My bad.)

Here’s my updated spreadsheet for 2020, with many of the cells colored now:

  1. Hi Sharon,
You’re making good progress with your PHD in 2020!
Your plum & gold quilt is going to be stunning … especially with variegated gold & brown threads !
It’s hard to quilt a king on a domestic machine … but it can be done! Once the centre is quilted – it gets sew much easier & then you’re done!
    Happy Quilting!

    1. Thanks for the encouragement! As I’ve said, I have been putting this off for quite a long time because I’m concerned about this size and the logistics. :o)
