It’s a Garden Party, with Cheryl LaPlante

Hi Quilting Friends,

We’re back today as hosts to our new quilting friend, Cheryl LaPlante. Cheryl doesn’t have her own blog, but she wanted to share the design that she created for the “It’s A Garden Party” Row Along Event. We’re turning our blog over to Cheryl today! Enjoy!

Happy quilting,

Sharon & Susan

Hello Quilters,

Welcome to this year’s Garden Party! The name of my row is Teddy Bears’ Picnic. I have named my new friends Honey Bear and Funky Bear. I would like to thank Marian Pena of Seams To Be Sew for organizing this event every year. It is such a fun event and one I look forward to every year; this is my 4th year participating. I would like to thank Ms. P Designs USA for all the work in helping me and allowing me a spot on their blog.

A big thank you to all the sponsors who provided us with giveaways. I would also like to especially thank Northcott Fabric for sponsoring us and sharing their wonderful fabric with us. Their fabrics are so beautiful and nice to work with.

Welcome to the Teddy Bears’ Picnic!

To save paper, print out the medium bush template, then trace 3 more from that pattern. Other than the Sky and Grass, I ironed fusible webbing onto the wrong side of the fabric. BEFORE fusing, trace your pattern in reverse on the webbing so the shapes won’t be facing the wrong way. Place pieces in snack size baggies also help keep the small sizes together and different units together. Ask me how I know, lol.

Other than the sky, grass, fern and post fabric…I shopped from my scraps. Most of the pieces, I used whatever scraps I had. Northcott Fabric supplied the following fabrics for my row:

Use your favorite applique method. The pattern will print out with seam allowance so just cut it off to do raw edge machine applique. I did leave the seam allowance on with the balloon and fern blanket as I wanted them to stand out more. I turned those raw edges under 1⁄4” before stitching them down. I used a variety of stitches… zigzag, double stitch and straight stitch. Use whatever stitches you are comfortable with.

For the bears facial features, I used Pigma pens on the bear with the balloon and Black Permanent Marker on the darker bear with the honey pot. The facial pieces are included in the pattern. But they are very tiny. Feel free to use embroidery, buttons, etc. to embellish your row.

  1. Cut SKY 6 1/2” x 20” and GRASS 9 1/2” x 20”. This will give you plenty of fabric for the slight draw up when doing the applique and allow for squaring up when completed. Sky and Grass are NOT fused. Stitch together and press seam to the grass. Draw a straight line about 1/2” from left edge. Draw a light pencil line across the sky fabric 4 1⁄2” up from the grass/sky seam and down the grass 7 1⁄2”. Measure over from left side line 18” draw the right side line. You are now ready to lay your pieces
  2. Cut out the Picket Fence posts and the pole for the bird house. The horizontal posts can be placed behind or in front. I started them about 1/8” away from side line. I wanted my vertical posts to be a little wonky so I spaced them different than shown in the pattern. Be sure to place the bird house pole BEHIND the horizontal posts. Fuse down and stitch.
  3. Place the big Bush in front of the fence, then lay down the blanket. Fuse down and stitch.
  4. Cut out the brown bear and honey pot. I found it easier to lay the pieces on a Teflon pressing sheet, then press so you can pick up in one unit. Allow to cool slightly before removing. Repeat for bear with the balloon. Place the bears on the blanket as shown in picture and stitch down.
  5. Cut and press down remaining pieces. Add embellishments. I used French knots on the flowers and did a double stitch for the balloon string.
  6. Square up to 12 1⁄2” x 18 1⁄2”. Add to your Row Along Quilt or make into a wall hanging.
