For us, Halloween is all about “creepy, scary, spooky, eerie” fun, so we’ve tended toward the whimsical and wonky with our Halloween quilt designs for the past few years. Susan, here today to share a fun Halloween project that I finished recently! Most of you don’t know this, but I haven’t been working on Ms P stuff since early March; I just needed to take a break and do my own projects. So when Sharon “guilted” me into making something for this blog hop, I agreed to make a couple of Halloween potholders to show. She suggested the wonky pumpkin block from this year’s “Wonky Halloween Sampler” quilt pattern.

I am REALLY not a fan of paper piecing, but since I discovered paperless paper piecing, I am ready to take on the challenge of making some foundation pieced pumpkins. Here are the two pumpkin hot pads that I made in a single weekend.

My daughter asked me what I was working on over the weekend and I sent her pictures of the wonky pumpkin potholders. Her response was “I’m all about the pumpkins, so are you making me some?”

Earlier in the year I made her a pumpkin, star, and black cat table runner, using another designer’s pattern. So I decided that my daughter needed placemats that would compliment her new table runner. I absolutely love the film strip borders that we have used on our Halloween quilts, so I wanted to incorporate it into the placemats.

It took me a couple of weekends to make this set of four place mats, complete with wonky pumpkins, film strip borders and spooky words.

Since the placemats were for my daughter, I let her choose the words that she wanted on them and she came up with “boo, eek, spooky and wicked”. They were really fun to make!

    I would possibly suggest Ghoulish, Ghastly, Haunting, Chilling… I purposely didn’t read anyone else’s comments before posting my own, so I could come up with ideas on my own… so hopefully I haven’t duplicated any!

  15. What great placemats. I enjoy paper piecing, but have to agree that the paper removal can be tedious. Next time I will try the paperless technique so thanks for the link! As for my words…creepy, scary, eerie and boo!

  19. I’m not really into the spooky kind of Halloween, so I’d go for some cutesy, silly words, like “Pie” “Harvest” “Autumn” “Smash”, lol

  30. Love your pumpkin placemats and I like the four words you chose. Since I don’t applique but I love to paper piece, I would replace the words with an assortment of paper pieced candy treats.
