Welcome to the “Picnic Party” Sew It Show It Challenge, hosted by our friend Carol at “Just Let Me Quilt”.

Our challenge this month was to create and share something that could be used at a picnic, maybe even a square quilt! We’re excited to share our projects with you, and to see what the other challenge participants are sharing this week.

Sharon here. We live in Houston, Texas, and it is usually way too hot outside in July to enjoy a picnic in the park. I love picnics, so I went to Montana last summer just to have a picnic with my Dad and my brother Richard! We stopped in at the Pickle Barrel, my favorite sandwich shop in Bozeman, and then ate our lunch at Story Park, just down the street from Montana State University where we all attended college.

After our picnic we drove up into the mountains of Hyalite Canyon and went for a short hike. What a lovely day, spent with two of my favorite guys!

Now back to today’s challenge! We have several quilt designs that are square, and suitable to use as a picnic quilt, all available from Ms P’s Pattern Shop.

I made a casserole carrier earlier this year, thinking that it will be great for taking a dish to share at a picnic-

The casserole carrier has an inside pocket for the serving spoon, and it is lined with Insul-Brite to keep hot things hot or cold things cold. I found the pattern HERE. This was a birthday gift for Gaby, our son’s fiancee, since they get together frequently for family celebrations, food, & fun.

I wasn’t sure that I’d have time to get my project finished in time for the challenge, but it went together more quickly than I anticipated. So, ta-done! This quilt is called “Celebrations”! The design reminds me of fireworks on the 4th of July, so I chose red, white, and blue for the colors.

I decided to use my scraps to piece the nine blocks, so each block is a little different from the rest. I kept the background the same everywhere, and I purchased a pretty navy plaid to use for the chains and the binding. One of the blocks that I made didn’t work well with the rest, so I added it to the back of the quilt.

Once the quilt top was finished and the backing was prepared, I took it over to Susan’s studio and we had Rosie quilt it. We used white thread and an edge-to-edge design with 3-D stars and loops. Here’s a close-up of the quilting-

  2. What a gorgeous quilt! I love that it is scrappy. Thanks for the link to that neat casserole carrier.
    If you were from Montana, I bet you really miss it, living in Houston. We lived near Houston for many years – Kingwood, Katy, Magnolia – and we finally moved to north Texas. I don’t miss the Houston area. Give me tornado threats over hurricanes any day – lol!

  5. “Celebrations” is a beautiful quilt! I love the patriotic colors, but it would be amazing in any fabrics. Adding the extra block on the quilt back is a nice touch.   15. That red, white and blue quilt is stunning! I wouldn’t want you to picnic in Texas right now. You would certainly get overheated but perhaps an indoors picnic can be arranged.
