Hi Quilting Friends,
The Round 1 challenge was to “make blocks that begin with your first initial”, which is “S” for me.
Here are some of the ideas that popped into my head-
- Square in Square
- Storm at Sea
- Squares
- Spiral
- Snail’s Trail
After careful consideration, and some time with my grid paper and a pencil, I decided to make a Sawtooth Star with my Fireworks block in its center.

My center block was left over from my 2023 “Celebrations” quilt. (Yay me for rescuing it from the orphan block bin!) Read about it HERE.

The next step was the fabric pull. Since the star points needed to be 6″ wide, I went to my stash to find red and white pieces. I purchased more fabric than I actually needed when I made “Celebrations”, so I’ll use the leftovers for this project.

Here are the finished sides of my Sawtooth Star block, with two sides attached to the center.

I’m going to wait to make the corners until later, with the hope that a future prompt will work with my vision of extending the diagonal line of blue squares toward the corners of the piece. (I’ll attach the other sides to the center block after those corners are finished.) The finished size so far would be 24″ by 24″.
So that was easy! Bring on Round 2; I am ready.
By the way, my “One Monthly Goal” for January was to choose a center block and complete Round 1 for the “Stay at Home Round Robin”. Ta-done, and goal accomplished!
Happy quilting,
Sharon

That is a great idea – I love stars within stars! I like to wait to sew things together sometimes, too. It gives you a little flexibility in layout after you see what you need to make.

Thanks! I opted for flexibility, since I don’t know what clues will pop up later. 😊
