Hi Quilting Friends,
Our prompt for this week was to add half log cabin blocks for Round 5, so I spent some time mulling over how to work them into my quilt and looking at the examples that were shared by our SAHRR hosts.
I’ve made lots of half log cabin blocks in the past, although I called the blocks “lazy log cabin” because they are SEW easy to make! Here’s a picture of the scrappy quilt that I finished several years ago, made entirely of half log cabin blocks from my scraps-

I wrote up a quick downloadable tutorial for making the “lazy” blocks, HERE. So here’s what I did for SAHRR!
I opted to make my Round 5 half log cabin blocks scrappy, with 2″ wide red and blue strips from my scrap bins. (I confess that I had to cut a few additional strips from my stash fabric, since I ran short on blue strips.) I stitched a total of eight blocks, each 7.5″ by 7.5″ finished size and then I sewed them together into two groups of four blocks each, like this.

My next step was to cut the block sets in half diagonally, and then I added a 2″ strip of my white print to each of the two shorter sides of the resulting triangles to make them a bit larger. After that I sewed the four large triangles to the edges of my central star. (This sounds tricky, but it really isn’t. If you decide to try it yourself, I highly recommend stay-stitching on both sides of the diagonal before you make the cuts, to prevent stretching.)
Here’s a photo of my quilt, with Rounds 1, 2, and 5. (Rounds 3 and 4 are finished, but not attached to the piece yet.) I like how the central star appears to float on top of the log cabin blocks.

Thanks for stopping by to see my project. I’m excited to learn what Round 6 will be!
Happy quilting,
Sharon

Your SAHRR looks great. I agree the center seems to float surrounded by the log cabins. Well done!

A very clever border 5. You would never guess that your quilt wasn’t completely planned.
