Hi Quilting Friends,
August has been a quiet month. I’m not saying that I didn’t stay busy, but my adventures were on a smaller scale and that’s nice too.
I’ve found fun things to do this past month, including lunches & dinners out with friends, afternoons at the neighborhood pool, daily walks with the dogs, a performance of “Henry V” at the Shakespeare Festival, an evening of chamber music, and a weekend caring for our grand-doggers.
I took a few pictures in the neighborhood and in our own backyard.
I had another productive month with my PHD, and now I am in the mood to start another new project (or two or three). I must exercise self control, to ensure that I can finish everything that I start. That’s one of the tricky parts of trying to earn a PHD!
How is your PHD list coming along? Are you feeling confident, or does the list still seem much too long? We have four months left in 2025 to make progress, so let’s see what we can accomplish during that time.
Project #2 – Lone Star Quilt

Hand quilting continues, slowly. Good thing that I am not in a hurry! This month I quilted the last of the eight squares that surround the central Star. Finally. I’ve also finished two of the eight edge triangles, and it was a pleasant change from the squares.
My “One Monthly Goal” for September is to quilt at least four of the eight edge triangles. (That’s just one triangle per week. I can do that easily, if I don’t get lazy.) Ready? Set. SEW!

Project #4 – Autumn Throw Quilt

My “One Monthly Goal” for August was to quilt the Autumn throw quilt. Ta-done!

I’m very pleased with how this quilt turned out; it was definitely a worthy use of my hand-dyes collection and the pretty autumn print. Read more about it HERE.
Project #8 – Scrappy Pinwheel Star Quilt
The RSC color for August was AQUA, and so I stitched up two more Pinwheel Star blocks.

This brings my total to 16 Pinwheel Star blocks, nearly enough for a throw quilt.
New Projects
The Glorious Basket of Scrappy Fun, the Saga Continues

I sorted my basket of 2″ by 3.5″ scraps into “darks” and “lights or brights”, and then I stitched them into pairs. The pairs were sewn together into sets of four, and then the foursomes sewn into sets of 16, and so on until the center of the quilt was finished.
The size of the quilt was determined by my scrap collection; I used up all of the pieces in my basket and then I cut about 50 more pieces from other scraps to make an even number of blocks in each direction. I ended up with a 16 block by 16 block center, 48″ x 48″. That’s 512 scrappy rectangles that were taking up space in my scrap baskets, made into a useful project.

I plan to add borders to frame the pieced center, using fabric from my stash (of course!). The backing will also be from my stash, since I have a good stack of fabrics from the 80’s and 90’s that are all waiting for a purpose. I haven’t taken time yet to audition borders, but I will probably get to it in September.
Ongoing Projects
I made another cute FPP coffee mug block in AQUA, the RSC 2025 color for August–

I’m still pondering a project for my mug collection, but haven’t made a decision yet. Take a look at the coffee mug block set, so far-

PHD Progress Update
Here’s my PHD list, with completed tasks shaded in-

Here’s my PHD tracker, updated for August.

As you can see, I have finished 11 of my 12 required PHD projects, with four months left in 2025. There’s plenty of time to finish one more item from that list without any pressure, plus extra time to play around with something new.

Thank you! Lone Star is my oldest UFO, pieced in the ’90’s. It will be good to finish, finally. 😊

Thank you! It took years of practice to make points look good, and I still mess it up sometimes.

It definitely takes practice. I noticed that my skills really leveled up the year I did the 365 Challenge quilt (block a day for a year). Many of the blocks were small and intricate. I think that may have been my peak skill level. lol
