SAHRR 2026: #1

Hi Quilting Friends,

The challenge for this week’s SAHRR 2026 round, as presented by Brenda @ Songbird Designs, was to add at least one hourglass to the quilt. Here’s mine!

I started by cutting twenty-eight 3″ x 3″ squares of various batik and hand-dyed cotton scraps. Each scrap was unique, since I have an extensive collection of scraps

My next step was to turn the squares into QST squares, aka “scrappy hourglasses”, which finish at 1.5″ x 1.5″ square. I sewed the QST squares into rows, and then I decided to add a narrow frame in deep plun around my applique block. I like how a quarter-inch frame adds interest without overwhelming the rest of the design.

If we didn’t have five more rounds to go, I’d be tempted to finish this up and make it into a little wall quilt right now. Not this time though; I’ll continue working through the challenges.

  6. I am a softie for autumn colors and motifs, so I really think your start for the 2026 SAHRR is wonderful! I love the central block, and how it is framed neatly by all those beautiful colors of batiks. Beautiful!!

  7. These colors are so pretty! I really love how the hourglasses frame your gorgeous center, and I can see why you are tempted to stop here and finish it as a wall hanging.
