Welcome to the “Call Me Crazy” Sew It Show It challenge, hosted by our friend Joan. Here’s how Joan explained the challenge-


“Sew something that you wouldn’t normally sew or share something you can’t believe you sewed. We all know that crazy and scary feeling of wondering what we were thinking when we started or were in the middle of sewing something out of our comfort zone.”

We’re each going to share a crazy project today, and Susan is first!

This is my “crazy” project, “What Was I Thinking?”

My unfinished (so far) project started its life as a pre-stamped whole cloth quilt, ready to layer and hand quilt. We have a king-sized bed, but the quilt isn’t king-sized so I decided to add a blue and white checkerboard border to make it larger. (My husband’s favorite color is blue, and we were newlyweds at the time.) With the border added, the quilt was the right size but it was BOR-ING. (At least I thought so, and isn’t that what really matters?)

I was thinking that a beautiful appliqued flower and ribbon border was exactly what this quilt needed to transform it from BOR-ING to WOWZA! (By the way, the appliques are also hand-stitched and you’re seeing only the half that are finished.) I made pretty good progress for quite a while, but life got complicated (moving to a different house, endless home renovations, several job changes, ongoing work commitments, the arrival of our grandchildren, and so forth) and I set the project aside. In the interim, Sharon and I started up our design business, Ms P Designs USA, and then my quilting time was (mostly) spent on creating drawings and stitching up models. So “What Was I Thinking” languishes in a bag in the back of the closet. I’ll pick it up again and get it finished (eventually), because it will be lovely. In the meanwhile, just call me crazy.

Now it’s Sharon’s turn!

I’ve always LOVED Amish-style quilts. I love the bold contrast of the solid fabrics, and the beautiful appearance of hand-quilting. (I’m a total sucker for a hand-quilted feathered wreath.) I decided that it would be “fun” to make an Amish-style Lone Star quilt, and then to hand-quilt it and hang it on a wall in our home.

I’m pretty sure that I pieced this lovely in 1992 or 1993, when we lived in Odessa, Texas. Our boys were little, and I was a stay-at-home mom with some free time to pursue my hobbies. Good times! In 1994 my husband’s job transferred to Houston, so I packed up the quilt and that’s where its story pauses. The boys grew bigger, and my “free” time diminished as I became involved with “kid” activities such as Cub Scouts, sports, and school. I started teaching full-time in 1999, so then there was even less “free” time. I’d pull the quilt out of the closet occasionally, admire the pretty colors, and then fold it up to return to the shelf.

This quilt is going to be gorgeous, so I need to just bite the bullet and begin quilting. I know that I’ll enjoy the quiet rhythm of hand-stitching, but it is difficult to get started. I anticipate that I’ll retire in May, 2024, and that would be a good time to resume this project. Call Me Crazy!

  2. I am so glad I am not the only one with projects that have been pushed aside for years. Life happens, to all of us though and yes…we all will get our chance to get back to those projects some day! Susan your quilt is WOWZA for sure. You sure knew how to kick that pre-stamped quilt top and make it sing! Sharon your Amish Lone Star is gorgeous. I love the looks of Amish quilts too. I completely get it about life with boys after spending years as a scout parent. Those days I wouldn’t trade for the world though.

  3. Wow, wow, wow for both of your projects! They will be awesome when they get done! I have couple (or more) UFOs that have been sitting around for a while… Should try to find time to finish them. Thanks for sharing yours!!

  4. I’ve always loved the crazy cute projects you two come up with, but I think these UFOs are above and beyond crazy. Having started them so many years ago and seeing that they were no easy projects, yep…you both are crazy (in a good way, of course.) All the hand stitching is a huge task, but I love them both! Thanks for sharing, Sharon and Susan!
