Hi Quilting Friends,

The color of the month for August is ORANGE. It’s never been one of my favorite colors, but I’ve managed to accumulate a bin filled with ORANGE fabric scraps, along with a few small pieces of ORANGE fabric in my stash, that will bring a “zing” of color to my quilting projects.

Here’s what I’ve been making with my ORANGE scraps!

Rolling Stone Block

Here’s another bright & colorful Rolling Stone block, made in ORANGE scraps.

Place Mat

I found a Sawtooth Star block in ORANGE and light gray, leftover from RSC 2021, in my stack of orphan blocks so that was my starting point for the August place mat.

I added a strip of ORANGE dot fabric, along with a rectangle of ORANGE print to create the place mat top, and then had some fun with quilting it. I used straight parallel lines in the print rectangle, outline-stitched the star points, diagonal lines through the orange squares, and a small meander in the gray pieces. The binding uses the ORANGE dot fabric.

Even though ORANGE isn’t my favorite color, I really like how it looks on my new place mat!

This week has felt a bit weird, but in a good way. My teacher colleagues have returned to school for their PD time, and I’m at home doing as I please. I won’t miss the meetings, but I will miss the people that I’ve worked with for so many years. Summer is over, and I can begin really enjoying my retirement. Yay!

  1. I am a recently retired educator. It does feel strange, even after 2 years to not be prepping for fall. But I’ve adjusted nicely. 😁

  2. So glad your “weird” was a good weird! I get it! Like you, orange has never been one of my favorite colors, but it has grown on me the past few years – still not a favorite, but ok!! Your projects are great! Have a great weekend!

  3. You made the most of those orange scraps. Being retired does have it’s weird moments, though for the most part they don’t last long. Hope you get in lots of stitching time this fall.
