Hi Quilting Friends,
Welcome to the jungle! Today we’re joining our friend Joan at MooseStash Quilting for a jungle adventure. We’re ready for this month’s challenge-
“Animals, plants, trees…what’s in your jungle?“
First, a quick look at projects from the past! Ms P has visited the jungles of the world, creating designs featuring animals that we all know and love-
We’re excited to share our newest pattern, “It’s a Jungle”, featuring animals from the jungles of Borneo and Sumatra!

Susan here. Today we’re going to share just six of the animals who are part of today’s project. Come back again on Friday to meet the rest of the gang!
Sun Bear

The Sun Bear is the smallest member of the bear family, averaging just 5 feet long and weighing in at around 150 pounds. Even though her body is small, her tongue is an impressive 10 inches long. This long tongue is most useful in obtaining honey from beehives, which gives the Sun Bear her other name, “Honey Bear”.
Proboscis Monkey

The proboscis monkey makes his home exclusively in Borneo. This monkey spends most of his time in the treetops, but he is able to swim if necessary. The male monkey’s protruding nose can be up to 4 inches long; the longer his nose, the more attactive he is to the females. Not sure why, but that’s what seems to make the lady proboscis monkeys happy, LOL.
Clouded Leopard

The beautiful clouded leopard, like most predators, has hind limbs that are longer than her front limbs to facilitate her jumping and leaping capabilities. She hunts for prey in the treetops as well as on the ground. Her sharp canine teeth are about 2″ long, which makes clouded leopard teeth the longest (in proportion to their body length) of all living felines.
Borneo Pygmy Elephant

The Borneo pygmy elephant is about 30% smaller than its Asian cousins, and he is usually extremely friendly toward humans. (Although it is probably best for him to avoid contact with humans, since humans are the greatest threat to a pygmy elephant!) The current wild population estimate is just 1500 individual elephants, indicating that the species is endangered.
Sumatran Rhinoceros

The Sumatran rhinoceros is the smallest of all rhino species, standing between 3 and 5 feet tall. She has two horns, with the larger horn toward the front of her head. This species is critically endangered; there are thought to be fewer than 80 individual animals living in the wild.
Orangutan

The orangutan spends most of his life high in the jungle canopy. He prefers the treetops, tending to avoid travel by land. He builds a comfy nest of sticks in a tree for sleeping at night, a new nest each night. Durian fruit is his favorite meal, but deforestation has had a devastating effect on the availability of habitat for this amazing ape. Like many other species who inhabit these jungles, the orangutan is critically endangered.
As always, I spent quite a bit of time doing research about the animals who make their homes in the jungles of Sumatra and Borneo, prior to starting with my drawings for the quilt. I was saddened to learn that many of these species, along with many others who weren’t included in the quilt, are threatened or endangered largely because of habitat loss due to human activities such as deforestation for agricultural expansion. Even though the homes of these jungle creatures are (probably) a LONG way from our own homes, here are ten easy ways to give a helping hand to endangered and threatened species.
