Hi Quilting Friends,
Welcome to the “Out of the Dark” blog hop, hosted by our friend Joan from MooseStash Quilting. We’ve missed you all! We’re SEW excited to share today’s project, and to catch up with the rest of the participating bloggers.
We’ve had lots of fun creating projects over the past several years, many of them for blog hops like this one. Here’s a quick slide show, featuring our previous Halloween projects, for your enjoyment!
Since we’re quilters and pattern designers, we almost always make a pattern for our projects so that our quilting friends can have fun too! If you saw something you love in the slideshow, have a look at our Halloween patterns.
Sharon here. I decided to create a “spooky” Halloween table topper for today’s blog hop, similar to the other table toppers I’ve designed for various seasons and holidays. (You can see all of the table topper designs HERE!)
My new table topper features a foundation pieced ” Wonky Square in Square” block which is surrounded by a pieced border and flanked with simple applique bats. The border triangles make me think of big scary monster teeth, LOL. I ended up making two variations of the design to share today.
Project #1
I “liberated” our bag of Halloween fabrics from Susan’s studio, and then pieced the central block and the borders, making a 12″ x 12″ square quilt.

I love bright colors for Halloween, but this wasn’t exactly the “vibe” that I had hoped to achieve for this design. Mr. Fix it suggested that it would be a great little wall quilt or table mat, so ta-da!
I quilted a spiderweb in the center block (fun!) and double triangles in the outer border (easy!). The unfortunate little ghost seems to be caught in the spider’s web! The orange binding wraps everything up quite nicely. And here it is on the coffee table in our living room. (Mummy likes it.)

Project #2
I limited the color palette for Project #2 to the more traditional Halloween colors- just orange, black, and white. Here’s the finished table topper on our kitchen table. Alas! The candy dish is empty; there’s still time to fill it (and empty it again, several times if I have my way with it) before Halloween arrives.

A narrow border on the top and bottom of the block, and panels with applique bats on the sides complete the table topper.

I enjoyed quilting the spider’s web on Project #1, so I did it again for Project #2. I also repeated the double triangle quilting in the pieced border. I quilted closely around the bats to help them stand out from the background, which is quilted with pebbles and double pebbles. Double pebbles look like creepy little eyeballs!

The binding is orange with a narrow black flange. How fancy is that! The finished table topper is 15″ x 21″.
You could make a 15″ x 18″ place mat with just one bat panel attached to the central square. Perfect for a spooky supper for you and your best ghoul friends!

Add another block or two in the middle of the piece for a cute and scary table runner! This runner would measure around 15″ x 40″.

You can buy the “Spooky Halloween Table Topper” pattern right here!

Thanks so much for stopping by today! We hope that you’ve enjoyed seeing our projects. Do you have a favorite project, old or new? Please leave a comment; it makes our day!

Both table toppers/runners are delightful, but I do love the traditional orange/black/and white colors together. Perfect timing for getting use from them this year, and enjoy the unfilling of your candy dish. 🙂 Thanks so much for linking up with Favorite Finish!
