Welcome to the “Something Smells Fishy” Sew It Show It challenge, hosted by our friend Carol at “Just Let Me Quilt”. We’re excited to share our new project, and to see how the rest of the gang has interpreted this month’s challenge-

“Fish or creatures from the ocean in fabrics, appliques, quilts, stuffies, or bags. If it looks fishy, it meets the challenge.”

Sharon here.  I decided to create a table topper with foundation pieced fish and appliqued bubbles, and here it is!

Our “Something Fishy” quilt features cute pieced fish, so I used the same block patterns for my table topper.

I made six small fish and one larger fish from the bright batiks that Susan and I selected from our stashes, and then I pieced the fish together for the center of the table topper. Aren’t they whimsical with their appliqued eyes and embroidered grins!

I appliqued circles using deep turqoise thread and a bubbly cotton print to represent bubbles on the ends of the table topper. The quilting is a loopy meander, with lighter aqua thread.

I framed the sections and added binding, using a gorgeous deep blue Laurel Burch print from Susan’s stash. The finished size of the table topper is 14″ by 28″, perfect for a small table. Omit one of the bubble applique panels to create place mats, or add more fish to make a longer table runner if you prefer. Ta-da! The newest addition to Ms P’s Pattern Shop.

  6. I love this fishy table runner with its unique and unusual looking fish. They are fun, colorful, and totally look fishy to me. Your quilting is perfect for it, too. Great job on this one, Sharon! Thanks for diving in that fish tank to meet this challenge!
