Block of the Month

July Block of the Month

Hi fellow quilters and elephant lovers!

It’s hard to believe that 2019 is already half over!  This month we are celebrating Independence Day for the U.S.  Our elephant dressed up as Uncle Sam and is carrying the U.S. flag.

Doesn’t he look dapper in his red, white and blue tuxedo with tails?  I cheated and used a flag from another patriotic fabric and the background is one of my favorite Northcott fabrics.  Can’t you imagine him singing “The Star-Spangled Banner?”  This little girl sings her heart out and it is one of my favorite interpretations of our beloved ballad.

“The Star Spangled Banner” became America’s national anthem by congressional resolution on March 3, 1931.  It is known for being very difficult to sing as originally written, so it makes me happy so see her adaptations to make the song singable for a 7-year-old (or even me)!

On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence for the new world colonies and two days later, July 4, 1776, all of the delegates from all 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence.  Brave men (and women) worked, fought and sacrificed for our freedom which we in the U.S. honor each year on July 4th.

Although our independence from Great Britain was celebrated each July 4th, it was not declared a federal holiday until 1870.  It wasn’t until 1941 that it became a paid federal holiday throughout the U.S.

We celebrate with barbecues, family gatherings and, of course, fireworks!  It is a wonderful time in the summer to celebrate those who fought and won our independence!

  1. Fabulous elephant! I might say this every month, but really, it’s true. This one is the best yet! Thank you so much for the summary of the history, too.

  2. Love your elephants! First child had an elephant she just adored from birth. Finally needed to be washed and decided perhaps a replacement was needed. Of course, she only wanted her original BoBo!
