Hi Quilting Friends,
Welcome to PHD in 2024! If you’re like many quilters, you may find that your enthusiasm for starting projects exceeds your motivation for getting them finished. Whether your kryptonite is pretty fabric collections, must-have tools, kits, classes, or patterns, temptations abound at every turn! It is much too easy for a modest backlog of projects to grow totally out of control, and that’s where PHD in 2024 comes into play.
So, you have more unfinished projects (UFOs) than you care to admit. (It’s OK. We all have a stack.) How does one go about systematically reducing the number of UFOs? Let’s get started!
PHD in 2024
- Choose around twelve UFOs that you would like to finish this year.
- Our definition of “UFO” will be very loosely interpreted–
- UFOs may be a quilt in progress that you’ve started & set aside
- UFOs may be kit or tool that you haven’t gotten around to using, yet
- UFOs may be fabric that you’ve collected in your stash for “later use”
- Our definition of “UFO” will be very loosely interpreted–
- Make a post to share the twelve projects that you’ve selected.
- Write a brief description of each project for your post
- Include a photo if possible
- Write a brief description of each project for your post
- Join the Link party (at the end of this post)
My PHD in 2024 Projects
I’ve added a couple of extra projects, just in case. You can always switch projects out if you like; the quilt police aren’t issuing tickets for doing so.
As you can see, some of my projects are clearly defined while others are still under consideration. I promise that the undefined projects will be UFOs, based upon the definitions above.
Project #1- Carolina Chain Scrap Quilt
I’ll use the Carolina Chain blocks that I’ve been making for the “Rainbow Scrap Challenge” in this project. Photo of quilt in progress.
Project #2- Star Party Sampler Quilt
Time to get this beauty quilted!
Project #3- Lone Star Quilt
This one too. Maybe I’ll quilt it by hand and hang it in my entry hall. . .
Project #4- “It Moose Be Love” Challenge Project
No photo at this time; I’m still mulling over the possibilities, but the deadline is mid-February so I’ll be starting soon.
Project #5- “Give It a Whirl” Challenge Project
This challenge is in March, so I have some time to make a decision about my project with pinwheels. Ideas are percolating in my head. . .
Projects #6 & #7- Sew It Show It Challenges, TBA
We like to participate each month, so I’ll choose a couple more challenges as the year progresses. (I like to stay flexible that way.) I promise that whatever I decide, it will have started as a UFO.
Project #8- Mint & Chocolate Batik Quilt
Inspiration has arrived, and I’m excited to start piecing. Looks like I might want to invest in a few more pieces of chocolate to balance all of that mint. . .
Project #9- FPP Vehicles from Scraps
Ideas are in place, but I haven’t started the drawings quite yet. I have scraps on hand for piecing them, but no photo today.
Project #10- New Design for Ms P
I have an idea in my brain, and plenty of fabric on hand. No image.
Project #11 – Blue Ridge Mountain Star Topper
The new design is drawn and I’ve pulled the fabric from my stash. Here’s my fabric pull, so far-
Project #12- Black & White Frankenbag
I have a nice pile of black and white orphan blocks, block parts, and scraps set aside along with a fun lining. Frankenbags are SUCH fun to make! Here are my scraps and orphan block parts-
My “One Monthly Goal” for January is to finish making my new Frankenbag. Ready, Set, SEW!

Projects #13 & #14- Play With Toys
I have a nice selection of toys in my studio, just waiting to play. I will choose the toys as inspiration arrives. No image yet.
Sharing Our PHD Progress
Here’s the catch! To earn a PHD in 2024, you’ll need to finish up the twelve UFO projects on your list AND complete any new projects that you start this year. Finishing the new starts is important because you’re trying to reduce the backlog of unfinished projects rather than add to it, LOL. Use this handy tracker from our friend Gail to keep tabs on your progress-
Here’s my PHD tracker for 2024-
Look for my PHD in 2024 update posts, usually on the last day of the month, and link up to share your progress. Won’t this be fun!
Now it’s your turn! Go ahead and make your PHD in 2024 list, write a post about it, and link it up. I can’t wait to see your plans.
Happy quilting,
Sharon

I’m looking forward to seeing your finished Frankenbag. I’m going to try to do a PHD and an RSC this year. It will be the first time for both. 😬
