Hi Quilting Friends,
The Rainbow Scrap Challenge color for October is neutral fabrics in dark or light. What could be more neutral than shades of gray and white? Here’s my first October RSC project!
I saved the scraps when I made the “Cubix” table runner earlier this year, and so I decided to use them to make a gray and white scrappy zipper bag. Here’s the finished runner, in case you haven’t see it before-

Zipper Bag

And here’s the pile of neutral equilateral triangles (white, ash gray, and charcoal) that I trimmed away when I made blocks for the runner.

It seemed like a lot of fabric to discard, so I set them aside to use later because I’m thrifty that way. “Waste not, want not”. I started by sewing the triangles into six rows, alternating the colors like this-

I trimmed and straightened the rows, and then sewed them together. I used lots of pins to help keep the seams aligned. It mostly worked out well. The panels are quilted with dark charcoal thread, using a continuous straight-line spiky triangle pattern.

I finished the bag with a dark gray zipper and lining from my stash. Ta-done!

This was a fun make, and I used almost all of those leftover triangles. I opted to discard the few that were left, and I don’t feel guilty about it. Not one little bit. This little bag will make a nice gift for someone, and I can’t wait to send it to its new home for Christmas.
In case you’re wondering, here’s my metatarsal #4 bone bruise recovery update:
I visited the orthopedic doctor again last Friday. I’m supposed to continue with rest, elevation, extra vitamin D and calcium, and either the beautiful boot or a pretty post op shoe to protect my foot until the end of October. At that point I’ll see him again for another follow up visit.
It wasn’t the news I had hoped to hear, but it is what it is. The doctor says that I’m making good progress, but injuries like mine usually need 12-14 weeks to heal so staying off the foot is crucial. Today marks week #7. Ugh. Since I’ll continue to “enjoy” loads of chair time, I have collected plenty of hand work to do and books to read while my bone is mending. I’m just glad that I don’t go to work any more. I can’t imagine how I could teach all day with this bummer of a foot.
Thanks for visiting today! I enjoy reading your comments, so let me know how about your “waste not, want not” projects. Visit the links that follow for eye candy and inspiration.
Happy quilting,
Sharon
