Hi Quilting Friends,
I know. Christmas is still a couple of months away, but today we’re going to look at Christmas decorating. It’s not too early to start the preparations for holiday entertaining. I’m SEW excited to introduce my new pattern- the “Christmas Bells” place mat set!

I drew designs for the Christmas bells last year, and then I put the drawings away “in a safe place” before forgetting that I had even drawn them. Do you ever do things like this? Yep. I think that we all do, now and then. Anyway, I found the rough sketches this summer when I was going through my file box. I spent some time making the drawings “pretty”, and then I digitized them to use for this new place mat set pattern.
My fabric selections are the same as those that I’ve used for my three previous Christmas designs, which coordinate with each other. Each set features a fun holiday motif made with foundation paper piecing, quick piecing, and some simple applique. Here they are, in case you’ve missed them-
I like the traditional combination of red, green, gold, and ivory for holiday decorating, so that’s what I’ve used. I think that this set would be gorgeous in other color ways too! I keep thinking “blues, silver, and white” or “cranberry, pine, and cream”, but I haven’t done it yet.

The bells are foundation paper pieced, and I used scraps from my Christmas fabric collection to make them. I added gold appliqued details on both sizes of bells. My bells don’t match each other, but they would be equally pretty if they were identical.

I quilted the place mats using pale yellow thread, with simple outline stitching around the bells, and free motion wishbone stitches in the borders. The binding is a spattered gold on red print from my stash.

The pattern for the “Christmas Bells” place mat set is available for purchase, if you’d like to create your own beautiful dining experience for your holiday celebrations.
