Greetings, fellow quilters!
Here I am with the final installment in our series about quick quilted Christmas gifts. I hope that your preparations are coming along well- Christmas will be here before you know it!
What holiday celebration would be complete without sharing special meals with family and friends? Today’s gift idea would be perfect for the host of this year’s family gathering. Make a few extras to keep for your own entertaining needs.
Idea #8: A set of hot pads or trivets for the “Hostess with the Most-est”
Can you really ever have too many hot pads when you’re having the entire family over to celebrate Christmas together? I’m always setting my hot pad down somewhere, when I’m busily completing those last-minute dishes, and then I have to look for another one to use when the next hot pan comes out of the oven. I can’t be too slow with my search, or the smoke alarm will go off (again), like it did at Thanksgiving. However, that’s another story, for another post. You can use these quick quilted beauties as trivets to protect the table top too!
This is another opportunity to use some of your favorite Christmas prints. You’ll want three or four different prints to make each trivet (or hot pad). These hot pads (or trivets) could be made to coordinate with the colors of the kitchen for year-round use, if you prefer. The 7″ square pieced star blocks are the perfect size for a hot pad or trivet, just add a narrow border of coordinating fabric. Our mix and match stars pattern includes options for the blocks pictured above, and many more. You can have a lot of fun experimenting with color and pattern combinations, since you’re only making a block or two at most.
After the blocks are pieced, you’ll layer and quilt them as desired. Use insul-brite® and a layer of thin batting to make them heatproof. Bind the quilted squares with a narrow binding, and add a loop for hanging if you like.
I hope that you’re inspired to create some colorful and functional hot pads (or trivets) for that next big dinner party!
Happy quilting,
Sharon
