Hi Quilting Friends,
Welcome back to the “Black & White Delight” Quilt-Along. If you’re just joining us, you may want to have a look at the “Welcome” post to help you catch up.
This week’s block is called “Cross My Heart”! This sweet little block features four cute pieced hearts, arranged into a cross. I hope that you’ll love making it!
Here’s what you’ll need this week:
- Fabric pieces from your Block 4 baggie
- Sewing machine (obviously!)
- Iron & ironing board
- Thread
- Scissors for snipping thread
- Pencil
- Rotary cutter & mat
- Ruler(s) I like my little 1″ by 6″ ruler for marking squares
- And my 3.5″ by 12.5″ ruler for cutting
- Beverage & snack(s) for hydration and energy!
Here’s a picture of the fabrics that you should have in the Block 4 baggie:

Let’s begin by making a set of 8 HST squares from Fabrics A and C. Refer to Page 15, Step 2 in the pattern packet for the sizes. Your finished squares will look like this:

Now sew the HST squares together with the Fabric B squares to make four 4-patch squares like this:

Draw a diagnonal line on the back of the sixteen small Fabric B squares. Make the tops of the four hearts with the Fabric B squares and the Fabric D square, using the “sew and flip” technique as described on page 15 step 5 of the pattern packet.

Make 8 HST squares with Fabric C and Fabric D, as described on page 16, step 7 of the pattern packet, for the bottom half of the four hearts.
Sew the heart sections into pairs, and then sew the pairs together to make four cute little hearts, like this:

Make the center of the block with the four Fabric C squares and the Fabric E square, using the “sew and flip” method, as described on page 16 step 9 of the pattern packet.

Sew the block sections together into three rows, two like this:

One like this:

And sew the rows together to make the center of the “Cross My Heart” block:

Make the frame for the outside of the block, as we did for the “Friendship Star” block. Start by making eight triangles with Fabric A and Fabric B:

Sew a HST square to each side of a Fabric B square.

Sew a 4-patch square to each end of two of the pieces. Make sure that the 4-patch units are correctly positioned. (I got one of my pieces rotated incorrectly, so I had to fix it later!)

Sew the shorter pieces to the sides of your block, and the longer pieces to the top and bottom. Ta-da! “Cross My Heart”, your block is finished.

Next week we’ll sew the Fractured Star block! Until then, may your stitches be straight, your bobbins full, and your seam ripper languishing in the sewing basket.
Happy quilting,
Sharon
