Hi Quilting Friends,
Welcome to the “Salt and Sand” blog hop, brought to us by our quilting friend Carol at “Just Let Me Quilt”. (Thank you Carol! This will be SEW much fun.) The challenge for this blog hop is to show a project with ocean / sand colors, or something that includes ocean creatures. We’re looking forward to seeing how everyone has interpreted this challenge!
As usual, when deciding upon a project for the “Salt and Sand” blog hop, we took a little time to review our previous projects. (All of the quilt patterns in the pictures are available from Ms P’s Pattern Shop.) We have created several unique ocean-themed quilts over the years:
Sharon’s turn to write today! I enjoy a nice trip to the beach to take a break from the everyday grind. I love the feeling of warm sand between my toes, the sound of the rolling surf that beckons me into the water, and the sight of a pod of dolphins swimming and playing in the deeper water. So relaxing. . . I’d love to be on some beach somewhere, right about now, wouldn’t you? This song makes me smile, every time I hear it. Enjoy!
I decided to make a quilted wine bottle tote with a cute mermaid as my project for this blog hop. My friend Cherie had a birthday this month, so I created the mermaid in her favorite colors for her birthday gift.

I’ve used this wine tote pattern several times; it is easy to make and can accommodate our unique applique designs. I didn’t have quite enough of my background fabric to make the tote all in one piece, so I added a decorative flange of my lining fabric between the handle and the body of the tote to make it work. The mermaid tote begged for wavy quilting, so I complied.

I added a bottle of Cherie’s favorite vintage, and ta-da! Raise a glass to friendship!

We’re having a giveaway during this blog hop, and you could win a free “Miss Mermaid” PDF applique pattern! Entries will be accepted through March 30, and the winner will be notified via email by April 1. Good luck!
Thanks so much for visiting today! Do you have a favorite beach? Where is it, and what do you enjoy doing when you go there?
Happy quilting,
Sharon & Susan

I am surrounded by beaches where I live. Sadly here on PEI we are not allowed to take glass bottles onto the beach, so no having a glass of wine while watching the sun set over the ocean….but I love your tote and I betcha I could figure out something.

How sweet your mermaid is. Perfect for the sand and salt theme and a quite nice gift for your friend. I love that blue and green fabric combination and their prints. Quite cheerful. How perfectly matched to the bottle seal. I hope your friend pours a glass for you and she to toast to summer fun.

Good project for the blog! Coming from a land locked state, I’m not too picky about beaches. I remember going to beaches and hope to be able to travel safely in the coming year. Thanks for sharing.

Your wine bottle tote is adorable, and useful, too – a great combination! I love any beach I can get to, but the Oregon Coast has a lot of my favorites.

My favourite beach is any beach where I can walk and walk and walk … We love to go to the Oregon coast and explore all of the beaches there. Unfortunately, until the Canadian/US border opens up, we can’t go! Hopefully soon!

I love the beach at Surveyors Lake, Kookanusa campground in British Columbia, Canada. Notice the name of campground? A great combination of Canada & USA (it is very close to that border so very appropriately named). Love your mermaid wine tote, cute & thoughtful. Thanks for sharing your creativity!

Love your tote! We love to go to Gulf Shores and fortunately live only about 3 1/2 hrs away from it. Our church has had women’s retreat there for many years now. Unfortunately we had to cancel the last retreat because of Covid 19, but we will be going in 2 weeks when our youngest daughter and her family will be visiting us.

Lovely gift for a good friend. Thank you for sharing.
I love being at a beach. When I get to Vancouver I have to make an afternoon trip to the ocean side. My favourite beach in the world is the beach at a favourite resort in Cuba. I had fun swimming there until some fishermen caught a barracuda that was swimming right next to me. When next I get to go, I will stick to swimming in the pool and enjoy the beach to sit, read, people watch and hike along to see the sand carvings.
