RSC 2026: September #3

Hi Quilting Friends,

The Rainbow Scrap Challenge color for September is PURPLE, my favorite color. Read the previous posts HERE and HERE.

I’ve been sifting through the scraps in my PURPLE scrappy basket, perusing my stash, and digging in the “orphan” block drawer. My ample privately curated textile collection yielded something fun for this month’s final project. Let’s take a look.

Zipper Bag

My PURPLE zipper bag for September started out as a pair of leftover strip sets from my orphan block drawer. I can’t remember what I made with them, so it had to be a long time ago. Each strip set had three fabrics, all with PURPLE as the predominant color. (Oops! I got so excited about making my bag that I neglected to take a photo of the “before” strip sets.)

I cut both strip sets into segments, and then joined the segments to make the bag panels. I added an extra strip of PURPLE fabric from my stash on the top of each panel to make them tall enough for the medium bag.

I used a variegated PURPLE thread for quilting, stitching diagonal lines through the squares and a row of mostly circular “beads” along the plain strips at the top of the panels. I like to practice my FMQ moves on small projects like this to keep the muscle memory fresh.

The lining (from my stash) is a PURPLE blender that looks a bit like marble, and the zipper is PURPLE too.

The PURPLE bag will join the other zipper bags to become a nice gift for a family member or a friend at Christmas.

I probably don’t need to make more bags, but I’m having lots of fun with it and I still have piles of scrap fabrics and plenty of zippers. We’ll see what happens!

As promised, here are a few pictures of our adventures in Port Aransas last weekend. I missed walking on the beach, due to my injury, so rides in the golf cart and a quick dip in the pool had to suffice. We had 9 adults and 6 children, so there was a lot going on. I love the beach! This photo is the view from the upper balcony of the beach house.
