June 2018 Block of the Month

Hi fellow quilters,

Welcome to our June Block of the Month!  We’d love to have you join our Facebook group,  2018 BOM  and post your BOM photos as you make projects with our patterns.  If you’ve just joined us, you can catch up on previous block of the month posts on our BOM page .

I love summer, and not just because I get some time off from school.  Here in the US, as in many other countries, we celebrate patriotic summer holidays, such as Flag Day in June and Independence Day in July.  Our neighborhood has a 4th of July Parade, complete with kids on their bicycles with colorful balloons or streamers, parents with baby strollers that are decorated for the holiday, a fire truck, old cars, and dogs wearing patriotic bandannas.  It is fun to get out and see the neighbors at the park where we gather for a hot dog and maybe a dip in the pool to cool off after the parade.  It’s a great big block party for the whole neighborhood!

This month’s block is an easy pieced patriotic star.  Wouldn’t this make a great table runner or set of place mats for your own summer celebrations?  Or maybe you could make a special quilt to honor  someone in the military for their service!

I chose to use traditional red, white, and blue for this block, since I was going for a patriotic theme.  The red fabric is a nice bold blender, the navy fabric has tiny white stars, and the white on white print features confetti.  I used template-free quick piecing methods to make the block, so it would be appropriate for quilters who are learning how to sew straight lines and match seams.

The pattern is available to purchase in Ms P’s Pattern Shop!

Here’s the miniature quilt that I made using the “Patriotic Star” block:

For the miniature quilt, I framed the central block with red and white strips, white squares at each corner, and a navy star applique in each white square.  I did simple, straight quilting in the white pieces, to enhance the design.  The binding is navy too, and matches the star appliques and star points from the center block.  It makes an easy to make, yet eye-catching little 12″ square quilt.

The pattern is available for purchase from Ms P’s Pattern Shop!

Thank you for stopping by for a  visit today!  I hope that you’ll enjoy making your Patriotic Star easy pieced blocks.  If you’d like to share a picture or see the pictures of projects from other quilters, please join our Facebook group,  2018 BOM  and post your quilt photo. We love to read your comments!  Have you tried out any of the BOM patterns yet?  Your feedback would be appreciated.

Until next month- Happy quilting,

Sharon

  1. I love your new block and the miniature quilt! I think the mini quilt would be great as a pillow as well as a hanging, maybe adding blue strips to the sides to make it larger if needed.

  2. That’s a great star idea, and the quiltlet would be a super holiday table topper. Thanks so much for the pattern.
