Stitching Sunshine

Hi Quilting Friends,

Welcome to the “Stitching Sunshine” blog hop, where we celebrate sunshine and all things YELLOW! Thanks to our quilting friend Carla from “Creatin’ in the Sticks” who is hosting the blog hop this week. We hope that you’ll be inspired by the projects that you see as you hop around the web and visit the participating bloggers.

Even though yellow has never really been our favorite color, we do enjoy some yellow in our quilt projects. Yellow is an energetic, attention-grabbing hue, and it makes people feel happy. Makes me think of a day filled with sunshine!

I’ve been on a mission this year to replace the sad-looking sofa pillows in our family room with something more colorful and cheerful! So far we have two new pillow covers to jazz up the sofa:

I’ve made another pillow cover for my blog hop project, this time with black, white, and sunshine yellow! My dear husband suggested that I could make a pillow with bumblebees all over it, and I suppose that would work too. But that was not what I wanted, ever. 😊

I’ve opted instead to use a block from our “Black and White Delight” collection, called “Fractured Star, adding some pops of yellow to make it even more fun! Here’s my first “Fractured Star” block, in black and white only:

And here’s my new pillow cover! I used three different pieces of brilliant sunny yellow fabric from my extensive private textile collection, and added some black and white fabrics for the background and other block elements. The 15″ block is surrounded by simple borders to fit my existing pillow form, and then quilted to add focus to the yellow pieces. Isn’t it fun!

The reverse side of the pillow cover is interesting too. I used some scraps from my black & white scrap bin, doing some “improvised piecing” by stitching the scraps together until the piece was the right size.

Update: We have randomly selected the winner of a free digital copy of the “Fractured Star” 15″ x 15″ quilt block pattern! Congratulations to Lee! Your free pattern has been sent to the email address that you provided with your giveaway entry.

You may purchase the “Fractured Star” block pattern right here, if you wish.

  2. I like everything you’ve shown us. That yellow pillow really does pop–and looks very sunny! I like to use yellow, orange, or red for a pop of color.

  4. That pillow in yellow is stunning. So uplifting.
To add pop and pizzazz, I use metallic copper fabric. It looks fabulous with all sorts of different colours – teal, hot pink, bright blue…
Thanks for the chance to win.

  5. This is a beautiful pillow, so bright and sunny. I can’t get over how different it looks with the yellow vs black and white. Great contribution to the hop.

  7. Beautiful sunshiny pillow! Like you, yellow is not my favourite colour, but I have used it as the main colour in the last two hop projects I have done. We must be craving the cheerfulness of a bright sunshiny yellow. 😉 Carol

  8. I love the cute quilt, but that yellow pillow is definitely the eye catcher. I love it and the back is so very clever. It really gives you a very modern feel to the pillow and one could easily use the the back as your front also as I saw no zipper on it or an opening area it all just blended in so perfectly. So sorry to be a day late commenting, been away this week so just trying to get caught up now.

  9. Thank you so much for that sunny, cheerful slide show, and for the pillow. Thank you for the chance to win the pattern to make my own pillow. Most likely, I’d spark it up with red or teal, as those are the two accents I use the most, but that yellow is tempting, too!

  10. Yes, bees would have worked but the pillow you make is gorgeous and will look wonderful with the other new ones. Have a great sunshiny day.
